The Athens Short Film Festival (ASFF) presents international independent short films in the Greek capital and is organised by HFP. Its competition covers fiction, documentary, animation, experimental work, comedy, drama, student films and music videos, with a separate award for Greek productions — films shot mostly in Greece. Short films run up to 45 minutes and music videos up to 15 minutes. Instead of sections by format, the screenings are grouped into thematic strands, and part of the festival’s stated mission is to bring mixed audiences of locals and international visitors back to the city’s neighbourhood cinemas.

The festival dates back to 16 June 2018, when the first edition screened at the Mikrokosmos cinema; the postponed 2020 and 2021 editions moved online before the festival returned to Mikrokosmos in December 2022. The 2025 edition, the eighth, is dated 11–14 December 2025 at the Elli cinema, with 45 short films from 22 countries in seven thematic strands and nine award categories.

Awards and prizes

Awards are given in competition categories, and the winners are chosen from the Official Selection. In 2025 the nine categories were Best Short Film, Best Short Documentary, Best Animated Short, Best Short Drama, Best Short Comedy, Best Short Experimental, Best Music Video, Best Student Film and Best Greek Production. Winners are presented at the end of the screenings and announced on the festival's website and social media. All winners receive the festival's official award certificate.

Festival rules

Films are submitted through the festival's FilmFreeway page. Short films must not exceed 45 minutes; music videos must be under 15 minutes. All films must be in English or have English subtitles. The Best Greek Production category is for films produced mostly in Greece; the category password is available from the festival team. Student films are submitted with student credentials attached. There are no premiere requirements, and films already available online are accepted. Trailers, partial screeners and work in progress are not accepted. A film submitted to the previous edition should not be submitted again. Filmmakers are responsible for the copyright of their materials and for technical problems with the submitted file. Fees are not refunded, and no feedback is given. Selected films are notified by email and compete for an award in their category; selection news stays confidential until the festival's official announcement.
