Be Afraid Horror Fest is a festival devoted entirely to horror cinema in Friuli Venezia Giulia, north-eastern Italy. Any genre crossover is welcome as long as the work is horror-related, and selected features and shorts are shown only on a cinema screen, never streamed. A parallel screenplay competition is open to feature and short horror scripts in English or Italian. Films screen in their original language with Italian subtitles, and the feature line-up consists largely of Italian premieres. The festival trophy, the Twisted Clapperboard, is handcrafted by Mattia Vignotto of Grind Airbrush&SFX.

The festival is directed by Federico Scargiali. It held its first four editions at the Kinemax cinema in Gorizia and moved to Cine Città Fiera in Martignacco, on the edge of Udine, in 2023. The sixth edition took place there on 22–24 November 2024; the organiser announced it as the last edition, at least for the time being.

Festival rules

Only horror-related work is eligible; any cross-genre is accepted as long as it is horror. Shorts: under 20 minutes. Features: over 60 minutes. Short screenplays: up to 15 pages. Feature screenplays: 60 to 100 pages. Screenplays in English or Italian. Premieres are prioritised in programming. Works not in English must be subtitled in English; every selected film supplies an English .srt file, even if it is in English. Any number of works may be submitted; submissions are accepted only through FilmFreeway. Selected films provide a press kit (poster, at least three stills, links, short English synopsis, main cast and crew) and an HD or 2K master by download link. Screenings are held in a cinema only, with no streaming.
