The Breckenridge Film Festival presents independent cinema each September in Breckenridge, a Colorado mountain town at 9,600 feet, about 80 miles west of Denver. Founded in 1981 as the Breckenridge Festival of Film, it is run by Breck Film, the non-profit the festival organisation became in 2020, which also operates The Eclipse Theater, the town's year-round art-house cinema.

The programme mixes features and shorts in drama, comedy, documentary, adventure, human spirit and animation with student and high school films. Filmmakers attend for post-screening Q&As, panels and receptions, and Best of Fest prizes are given by category alongside audience awards. The 46th edition runs 17–20 September 2026 in downtown Breckenridge, with nightly screenings at the Riverwalk Center.

Awards and prizes

Best of Fest awards are given in each of these categories: Best Drama, Best Short Drama, Best Short Comedy, Best Documentary, Best Short Documentary, Best Adventure, Best Human Spirit, Best Animation, Best Student Film, Best High School Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Writing, Best Editing and the Director's Choice Award. Audience Awards are given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Festival rules

Films must be complete, not works in progress, when submitted. Selected filmmakers sign a notice of consent, and acceptance is conditional on meeting the promotional, press kit, information and exhibition copy requirements sent with the acceptance email; press materials are not accepted before notification. Accepted films are screened from DCP or .mov files, depending on the venue. Featured or special programming screened for a licensing fee is not eligible for awards. Submission fees are non-refundable. Submitting an entry constitutes full acceptance of the festival rules, and the festival decides all questions not covered by them.
