Caminhos do Cinema Português is a festival devoted entirely to contemporary Portuguese cinema, based at the Casa do Cinema de Coimbra. Its main competition, Seleção Caminhos, covers Portuguese productions and co-productions of every genre and length and awards the Grand Prize "City of Coimbra" together with a full set of technical and artistic prizes, while a FIPRESCI jury gives a critics' prize. Seleção Ensaios shows film-school and training works from Portugal and abroad, and Outros Olhares is reserved for experimental approaches. Non-competitive programmes include screenings for schoolchildren, young people and seniors, Filmes do Mundo with an emphasis on the Portuguese-speaking world, a retrospective and the late-night Turno da Noite.

The event began in 1988 as a showcase of Portuguese cinema growing out of a University of Coimbra summer course, returned in 1997 after a seven-year break and has awarded prizes since its fifth edition. It is organised by Caminhos do Cinema Português – Associação de Artes Cinematográficas de Coimbra and is on the priority list of festivals of Portugal's Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual. The 32nd edition takes place on 14–21 November 2026.

Festival rules

The competitive sections are open to Portuguese productions and co-productions completed in the 14 months before the submission deadline; older films may also enter if they have not yet been shown in commercial or alternative circuits. International productions are accepted only in Seleção Ensaios (film-school and training works). Films with dialogue in a foreign language need Portuguese subtitles. Works under 60 minutes count as short films. Films submitted to earlier editions are not accepted, and there is no limit on the number of films per director or producer. Submission is only through FilmFreeway, with fees that depend on the submission period, on length and on whether the film is Portuguese or international; students get a 50% reduction. The festival pre-selects the films and may programme them in a different section than the one chosen at submission, or in additional educational and social screenings. No screening fees are paid for films in competition. Selected films send a DCP, technical sheet, director's biofilmography, stills, poster and a trailer or two-minute excerpt.
