FICNOVA, the Active Nonviolence International Film Festival (ANIFF), is a thematic competition for films that denounce a form of violence – physical, economic, racial, religious, sexual, psychological or moral – and also show a nonviolent way out of it. It is run by volunteers on a non-commercial basis by FICNOVA, a non-profit humanist association in Spain inspired by Universalist Humanism, together with teams in other countries. The first edition took place in 2013. The festival is polycentric: the selection is screened in several host cities at once, including Madrid and Vigo, Santiago de Chile, Mexico City, Tandil and Prague.

The competition is held every two years in the week of 2 October, the International Day of Non-Violence. It has a General Section for feature, medium-length and short films and a section for primary and secondary schools. The award is the “Estela”, a bronze and copper statuette by Daniel Zimmermann; there is no cash prize. The 8th edition runs 2–10 October 2026, with screenings in host cities from 18 September to 31 October 2026.

Awards and prizes

Estela de FICNOVA: the festival award, a statuette cast in bronze and copper, a replica of the work created for the festival by the Argentine artist Daniel Zimmermann. It is named in memory of Estela Rodríguez Ghiara, a humanist who took part in organising the festival. The jury chooses the Estela winners from the finalists in each category: General Section – feature film, medium-length film, short film; Educational Establishments Section – short film. A category may be left without an award. The organisers may also give a special Estela de honor to the works most significant for nonviolence. All finalists receive a diploma. There is no cash prize.

Festival rules

Rules of the 8th edition (2026) Theme: only films that denounce a form of violence (physical, economic, racial, religious, sexual, psychological or moral) and also offer a nonviolent way out of it are admitted. Languages: any original language; Spanish and English subtitles are compulsory. General Section: open to anyone of any nationality, and to groups and institutions represented by an adult. Feature films – 60 minutes or more; medium-length films – 31 to 59 minutes; short films – up to 30 minutes. Screening copies in Full HD (1920x1080), H.264. Educational Establishments Section: short films up to 30 minutes from the community of primary and secondary schools (pupils, teachers, parents, staff), entered under the responsibility of an adult who confirms parents' or guardians' consent for minors on screen. Universities and film schools enter the General Section. Entries are made through the festival platforms listed on the website, with a technical sheet and synopsis, a trailer of up to 2 minutes, a statement by the director or producer on the motivation of the film and the forms of nonviolence it shows (under 1 minute of audio or video, or under 500 words), two stills and a poster if available. Up to five finalists per category are chosen from the official selection. Selected films cannot be withdrawn. Participants grant FICNOVA non-exclusive rights to screen the films, without commercial use, during the festival week and at later events promoting nonviolence.
