Cinemed is devoted to the cinemas of the Mediterranean basin, the Black Sea, Portugal and Armenia and takes place each October in Montpellier. It grew out of a week of Italian cinema organised in 1979 by the team of the Ciné-club Jean-Vigo, a Montpellier film society; the event took the name Festival International du Cinéma Méditerranéen de Montpellier in 1989, when it introduced competitions for feature and short films, and added a documentary competition in 2001. Alongside the competitions, the programme combines previews, tributes and retrospectives with screenings for children and secondary-school students.

Cinemed Meetings, the professional section since 2013, presents Mediterranean feature projects in development and includes the development grants the festival has awarded to fiction feature projects since 1991. The 48th edition runs from 16 to 24 October 2026 at the Pathé Comédie and the Centre Rabelais, as the Corum, the festival’s usual venue, is closed after storm damage.
