Its international selection covers professional and amateur, independent and commercial work; the Animation Division includes features, shorts, television series and streaming productions. The festival dates back to 1997 and combines awards with exhibitions, screenings and symposiums under the Japan Media Arts Festival Executive Committee.
The latest numbered edition is the 25th, with exhibition dates of 16–26 September 2022 at Miraikan in Tokyo and satellite venues. The official archive also includes a separate quarter-century retrospective in Tokyo, with dates of 4–14 February 2023.
