Milano Film Festival is a festival of independent cinema in Milan, produced since 1996 by esterni as part of the APRILE cultural association. It began with an evening of Milanese short films in a deconsecrated church, opened its short-film competition to international entries in 1998 and added an international feature competition in 2000. Over the years its programme combined competitions with retrospectives, director focuses, an animation marathon, music and screenings in public spaces across the city. The festival aims to support Italian and international independent cinema, young authors under 40 and newcomers, and shows films in their original language with Italian and English subtitles.

Gabriele Salvatores became artistic director in 2018, and the festival received the City of Milan's Ambrogino d'Oro in 2015. The last edition took place on 8–10 October 2021 in the Porta Venezia district, with an International Film Competition of feature and short films not previously shown in Italy.
