Friss Hús is a Budapest festival of new short films and the only festival in Hungary that qualifies short films for the Academy Awards: since October 2024 its Best Hungarian Live-Action Short Film and Best Hungarian Animated Short Film winners qualify for the Oscars, and since July 2026 it is also a BAFTA-qualifying festival for British shorts. The programme combines a Hungarian competition for films by Hungarian directors, an international competition of live-action and animated shorts and an international documentary competition, alongside non-competitive horror, queer, Weirdcore and Genre Fever! sections. Screenings centre on the Puskin Cinema, with open-air shows in the City Hall garden and sidebar screenings in other Hungarian cities.

Founded in 2013 by festival director Dániel Deák and editor-in-chief Anita Libor, the festival also runs industry events, including the Friss Pitch short film pitching forum and the Fresh Meet Market talent platform. The 15th edition takes place on 27 May – 2 June 2027.

Festival rules

Friss Hús Budapest ISFF accepts short films of any genre and from any country: live-action fiction and documentaries up to 40 minutes, animation up to 20 minutes. For the 2027 edition, films must be completed after January 2025. Films already screened on television or the internet are not accepted, and re-submissions are not accepted. Films advocating hate speech, hate crimes or negative discrimination are disqualified. Submissions are made through FilmFreeway or Shortfilmdepot; entries sent by post, e-mail or any other form are not eligible unless agreed in advance with the Festival Programming Committee. LGBTQ+, horror, animation, documentary, Weirdcore and Genre Fever! films are submitted through the special categories and are also considered for the International Competition. Hungarian Competition: the director has to be Hungarian; entries are accepted from Austria, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia. International Competition: the film must be made entirely outside of Hungary or the director has to be non-Hungarian. Selected films are screened from DCP (24 fps); all films must have English subtitles unless they are in English. Award-winning films may be shown in Best Of screenings in Hungarian cities and on a Hungarian VOD platform for 15 days after the festival.
