Portobello Film Festival screens independent film in Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove, West London, with free admission to its screenings and free entry for submitted films. It was created in 1996 as a reaction to the state of the British film industry. Because it has never charged admission, it grew up outside commercial cinemas, in tents in Athlone Gardens, nightclubs, parks and bars; today most screenings take place at The Muse gallery on Portobello Road, with the opening night at The Gate Picturehouse in Notting Hill Gate.

The programme runs as themed evenings of national and local selections, London and UK films, animation, documentaries, horror and music films, and closes with an award ceremony. The organisers are also digitising the festival's archive of past submissions for the streaming channel Portobello People's TV. The dates for the 2026 edition are 3–20 September 2026.

Festival rules

Entry is free. Filmmakers fill in the festival's application form and email it with a link to the film (ProRes or H.264). The applicant certifies that they hold all rights needed to submit the film. Selected films may also be streamed as part of the festival and on the Portobello People's TV channel unless the applicant ticks No Streaming on the form. The festival's decisions on prizes, programming and inclusion are final.
