Luchezarny Angel is an international charity film festival in Moscow built around what its organisers call “good cinema”: films that uphold traditional moral and spiritual values, with particular attention to children, young people and families. It is a project of the programme “Spiritual and Moral Culture of the Younger Generation of Russia” and is held under the spiritual patronage of the Patriarch of Moscow. The festival counts its beginning from January 2005, when its first screenings took place at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour; its dates are timed to National Unity Day and the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

Every film is assessed by a Spiritual Expert Council as well as a selection committee. Juries award cash prizes, diplomas and the “Luchezarny Angel” statuette in feature, short fiction, documentary and animation competitions, alongside out-of-competition and retrospective programmes, charity screenings and animation and art workshops. The 23rd edition runs from 31 October to 6 November 2026 at the Poklonka cinema at the Victory Museum.

Awards and prizes

Juries award prizes in four nominations: feature film, short fiction film, documentary and animation. Winners receive cash prizes, diplomas and the “Luchezarny Angel” statuette; the festival also has a Grand Prix. Juries may give special nominations, and the regulations recommend several on the theme of the Great Patriotic War and military duty. The Organising Committee may give a special “Luchezarny Angel” prize for an outstanding contribution to Russian cinema, and partners and sponsors may present their own prizes.

Festival rules

Russian and international films completed between 1 January 2024 and 1 September of the festival year can enter the competition. Films already submitted to an earlier competition of the festival are not accepted; screenings at other festivals and theatrical release do not prevent entry. Entry is free. To enter, send the festival directorate by email a link to the film for the selection committee, the entry form (a signed scan and a Word file) and materials for the catalogue: stills, trailer, director's biography, photo and filmography. Foreign entrants also send Russian or English subtitles as an SRT file or a timed dialogue list. The deadline for the 2026 edition was 20 July. Films are reviewed by the Spiritual Expert Council and the selection committee. Films with profanity (even if bleeped), violence, erotic scenes, promotion of drugs, alcohol or smoking, or scenes offensive to believers are not accepted. Series are not accepted, although single episodes with standalone artistic value may be programmed. Each director may have only one film per competition, except in animation, where episodes of commercial series may compete alongside one auteur film.
