International Animation Festival Hiroshima
広島国際アニメーションフェスティバル
International Animation Festival Hiroshima is a biennial festival of animation held in Hiroshima, Japan, every August from 1985 to 2020 and endorsed by ASIFA, the International Animated Film Association. The City of Hiroshima and ASIFA launched it as a project marking the 40th anniversary of the atomic bombing, with the shared aim of promoting peace and international understanding through animation. The festival grew out of the efforts of animators Renzo Kinoshita and Sayoko Kinoshita; Sayoko Kinoshita is its director from the first edition onwards.
At its core is an international competition of recent animated shorts judged by an international jury, with the Grand Prize, Hiroshima Prize, Debut Prize and Renzo Kinoshita Prize, alongside retrospectives, student and children's programmes, the Animation for Peace strand and an educational film market. The last edition, the 18th, took place on 20–24 August 2020 in a reduced format: because of the COVID-19 pandemic the international jury judged the competition online and the public screenings and special programmes were cancelled. The festival's organising committee was dissolved on 31 March 2021.
