Pictoplasma Berlin is a conference and festival devoted to character design and figurative art, held each spring in Berlin since 2004. It is run by Pictoplasma, a curatorial organisation founded in Berlin in 1999 that works across illustration, animation, art, design, games and new media. The central conference programme consists of lectures and talks by illustrators, designers, artists and animation filmmakers. Alongside it, the animation festival screens a curated selection of character-driven short films, music videos and experimental work, with many filmmakers present for Q&A sessions. The event also includes the Character Lab with workshops and media demos, industry networking with portfolio reviews, and a Sunday Open House with a character art market.

The 2027 edition, the 23rd, takes place from 29 April to 2 May 2027 at silent green, a former crematorium turned cultural venue in Berlin.

Festival rules

Submissions are free of charge and accepted at any time; films received before the annual deadline are considered for the next Berlin selection (for 2027: 11 January 2027). Eligible are character-driven animated short films, music videos and experimental work, including narrative, non-narrative, commissioned and student films; the typical length of selected films is 1 to 15 minutes. Each film is submitted as a Full HD QuickTime file via download link, together with the official entry form. A jury selects the films for the official screening programmes. By submitting, the rights holder grants Pictoplasma non-exclusive rights to screen the film in its festival programmes and conference broadcasts for registered attendees, and to use up to 10% of the running time for promotion.
