MOTELX presents Portuguese and international horror cinema in Lisbon, with recent features, shorts, retrospectives, documentaries and films for children. Organised by the non-profit cultural association CTLX, the festival dates back to 2007 and uses Cinema São Jorge as its main venue.

Its programme includes the MOTELX Award for Best Portuguese Horror Short Film, alongside workshops, masterclasses and other events. MOTELX is a member of the Méliès International Festivals Federation and the Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe network. The 21st edition takes place from 7 to 13 September 2027 at Cinema São Jorge.

Awards and prizes

The festival awards the Méliès d’argent for Best European Feature and Best European Short, Best Portuguese Horror Short, Best Portuguese Horror Animated Short, the Room Service Audience Award, Best Portuguese Horror Screenplay and Best Big Bad Wolf Short. Winners of the European feature and short awards are nominated for the Méliès d’or competition.

Festival rules

The festival accepts feature, medium-length and short films, including fiction, documentary, live action and animation. Submissions are made through FilmFreeway. Screening copies must have English subtitles except for English dialogue and Portuguese dialogue in films competing for Best Portuguese Horror Short Film. Portuguese horror shorts in that competition must be national or majority Portuguese co-productions, no longer than 15 minutes, commercially unreleased in Portugal and unavailable publicly online through the end of the festival.
