The festival dates back to 1980, when seven films from Asia, Africa and Latin America screened at ciné-clubs across French-speaking Switzerland. Its Official Selection consists of an International Competition for feature films and another for short films under 30 minutes, both focused on works from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Near and Middle East and Eastern Europe outside the EU. The top feature award is the Regard d’or.

Parallel sections, an Audience Choice vote and Planète Cinéma, a programme for schools, complete the festival. It is run by a non-profit association founded in 1987. The 41st edition takes place from 12 to 21 March 2027 in Fribourg, Switzerland.
