Anima Mundi – International Animation Festival of Brazil
Anima Mundi was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1993 by the animators Aída Queiroz, Cesar Coelho, Léa Zagury and Marcos Magalhães. Its first edition screened 144 films at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre; a São Paulo leg followed in 1997, and the festival then ran in both cities. From 2012 the Grand Prize-winning short film was eligible for Academy Awards selection.
Submissions covered short films, Brazilian short films, children’s shorts, portfolio, feature films, children’s features, gallery and student films, and the 2019 call added documentary shorts and virtual reality. The latest edition on record, the 27th, took place in 2019: 17–21 July in Rio de Janeiro and 24–28 July in São Paulo. It went ahead thanks to a crowdfunding campaign after the festival lost its long-time sponsor Petrobras.
