Born on November 10, 1951 in the city of Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Moscow region. In 1970 he graduated from school No. 14 . Orekhovo-Zuyevo. He served in the Soviet Army, in the Astrakhan region (Kapustin Yar, regimental training school for junior commanders). He worked for several years at the Orekhovo-Zuevskaya weaving factory.

From 1974 to 1978 he studied at GITIS (course of V. P. Ostalsky, teacher L. Knyazev). He studied at the same course with Tatiana Dogileva and Yuri Stoyanov, who was Sukhorukov's roommate in the dormitory of the Institute. At the same time, Stoyanov was the youngest in the course, and Sukhorukov was the oldest.

After graduating from GITIS, at the invitation of Pyotr Fomenko, he left for Leningrad and entered the Comedy Theater named after N. P. Akimov, where he was approved for the main role in the play "Good, Okay, Good" based on the works of Vasily Belov.

In 1986, Sukhorukov was accepted into the Leningrad State Theater named after the Lenin Komsomol. Here he played in the plays "The Persistent Tin Soldier" (1986), "The Marriage of Belugin" (1987), "The Dragon" (1988), "Long live Stupidity!" (1991), "The Children of Raik" (1991).

In the cinema until the end of the 1980s, he was practically not in demand. The actor's new life began in 1989, when director Yuri Mamin invited him to a big role in the comedy-farce "Sideburns" about the Pushkin society. The film turned out to be a success, and the young director Alexey Balabanov became interested in the actor. He offered Sukhorukov to star in his film "Happy Days" based on the works of Samuel Beckett, and the actor agreed. Sukhorukov stated: "Balabanov "made" me with his paintings, and I helped him".

In 1997, Alexey Balabanov's film "Brother" was released on the screens and Sukhorukov, who was already 45 years old at that time, came to all-Russian fame, supported by the film "Brother 2".

For the role of Emperor Paul I in Vitaly Melnikov's film "Poor, Poor Pavel".he was awarded the Nika Film Award in 2004.

He was invited to Hollywood to star in the Bond film "Die, but not now", but refused because he played in Oleg Menshikov's play "The Players".

The Golden Eagle Award 2011 for the best supporting actor in the film "Oatmeal".

In 2017, speaking about the roles that characterize the actor in the best way, Sukhorukov called such films as "A Comedy of strict regime", "About freaks and people", "Poor, poor Pavel", "Island", "Not by bread alone" and "The Propaganda brigade "Beat the enemy!""
