Finalists revealed for Izmir Short Film Festival, Turkey’s only Oscar-qualifying event

The 24th Izmir Short Film Festival, which is Turkey’s only Oscar-qualifying festival, has announced the finalists for its five categories: international and national fiction, documentary, experimental and animation. The festival, which will take place from November 14 to 19, received 3,999 submissions from 118 countries. The finalists for the 24th Izmir Short Film Festival have been revealed. The festival, which is the only one in Turkey that has the Oscar Qualification certificate, will present 38 short films in five categories: international and national fiction, documentary, experimental and animation. The festival, which has been running continuously for 24 years, aims to support young filmmakers and raise awareness about sustainable film education and environmental issues.

The festival received 3,999 submissions from 118 countries this year. The selected films will compete for the Golden Cat Awards, which will also enable one animation and one fiction film to apply for the Academy Awards. The festival program, which will be available at www.linktr.ee/izmirkisafilmfestivali, will also include film screenings, workshops, and a film lab for young filmmakers. The festival will take place from November 14 to 19 at the French Cultural Center, Karaca Cinema, Tarık Akan Youth Center and the festival’s online platform.

The finalists for the international fiction category are: Yellov by Elham Ehsas (UK), Alex’s Machine by Mael Le Mee (France), The Things To Come by Santiago Rafales (Spain), It Turns Blue by Shadi Karamroudi (Iran), Super by Nikolas Kouloglou (Greece), A Short Film About Kids by Ibrahim Handal (Palestine), Auxiliaire by Lucas Bacle (France), Leaf by Thom Lunshof (Netherlands), Allegresse by Gillie Cinneri, and On Purpose by Adas Burksaitis (Lithuania).

The finalists for the national fiction category are: Yeni Bir Mağlubiyete İhtiyacım Yok by Tolga Özdemir, Aç Karnına Çıkmayalım by Yiğit Hepsev, Hangi Gece Büyüdüysem by Onur Güler, Ben Süpermarket Değilim by Ekrem Ayhan, Çakay Tarihte Yaşanmamış Olaylar by Ramazan Kılıç, Nasıl Kaybolunur by Tilbe Cana İnan, Sonunda by Resime Emir, Avrupa Fatihi by Onur Yağız, Burası Bize Göre Değil by Ceyda Aşar, Evcil by Deniz Uymaz, Nefes by Cem Terbiyeli, and En Uzun Gece by Can Merdan Doğan.

The finalists for the national documentary category are: Jade Rain by Volkan Durmuş, Cevizin Altında by Begüm Aksoy, Emma by Merve Kuş, Mataracı Duvar by Evrim İnci, and Hayatımın En Güzel Günü by Semih Sağman.

The finalists for the national experimental category are: 8 Mart, 2020: Bir Günce by Fırat Yücel, Trüf by Göksel Altül, Ayna by Zahid Çetinkaya, Club Eterna by Bora Güler, and Vuruyor Gol Oluyor by Berk Ali Çekmez.

The finalists for the national animation category are: Aşkımız Ölümsüzdür by Ender Yıldızhan, Yabancı Hatıralar by Serhat Şen, Azami Nefes Sayısı by Mehmet Nuri Kaya, Wolf’s Box by Uğur Savaş, Spark by Öykü Su Baskın, and Labirent by Selçuk Ören.
