CINANIMA: European Cultural Identities in Focus at Animation Festival

The 47th edition of CINANIMA, the International Animated Film Festival of Espinho, is set to take place from 13 to 19 November. This year, the festival aims to highlight the diverse cultural identities across Europe, from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe. The festival is expected to be a comprehensive journey through Europe, showcasing different experiences and perspectives from various parts of the continent.

In addition to the competition, the festival will premiere five feature films and two outside of the competition. The short film competition will include 125 films from 33 countries. The festival is organized by Nascente Cooperativa de Ação Cultural in conjunction with Espinho City Council and will take place at the Centro Multimeios de Espinho, the Casino Auditorium, and the Solário Atlântico Swimming Pool.

The festival will also host a series of masterclasses, exhibitions, training sessions, and presentations. One of the highlights of this edition is the ‘100 years of Portuguese Animated Cinema’ exhibition. Another notable event is the masterclass with Craig Caldwell on ‘Bringing characters to life’, scheduled for 14 November.

The festival will also continue its tradition of connecting with the communities of the Espinho region, reaching out to school groups, associations, and local authorities. The festival represents a deep dive into the cultural riches of Europe and the complexity of human experience, exploring philosophical themes and showcasing world animation talent.
