German Film Scholar Ingo Petzke Receives 2024 Animafest Zagreb Distinction

Animafest Zagreb has announced that the 2024 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animation Studies will be presented to Ingo Petzke, a distinguished German film and video art expert. Born in Osnabrück in 1947, Petzke pursued his higher education in Journalism, Scandinavian Studies, and Contemporary History, graduating in 1973. His passion for film led him to become an associate at the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen. In 1980, Petzke, alongside his students, founded the Experimental Film Workshop in Osnabrück, which later evolved into the European Media Art Festival (EMAF).

Petzke's academic career flourished when he became a film professor at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt in 1983. His international experience includes roles as a visiting professor at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and as an associate professor at Bond University on the Gold Coast, Australia. In 2006, he completed his PhD at the University of Osnabrück with a thesis on director Phillip Noyce and continued to work as an associate professor and research associate at James Cook University and Cairns Institute.

Throughout his career, Petzke has contributed significantly to film studies and experimental cinema through mentoring, supervising award-winning student films, curating film programs, and authoring influential works, including the Experimental Film Handbook. His initiatives have been crucial in promoting the importance of animation and experimental film on a global scale.

Petzke's influence extends beyond his practical contributions; he has also been instrumental in fostering academic discourse in animation. He will be the keynote speaker at the Animafest Scanner XI 2024 international symposium, further highlighting his ongoing contributions to the field of animation studies.

This recognition by Animafest Zagreb underscores Petzke's enduring impact on the study and appreciation of animation and experimental film, celebrating his decades-long dedication to educating and inspiring future generations of filmmakers and scholars.
