SXSW Expands to London: New European Edition Set for June 2025
In a significant expansion of its global presence, the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival has announced its first European edition, SXSW London, set to kick off in June 2025. Traditionally held in Austin, Texas, the festival is renowned for its dynamic blend of music, technology, and film, attracting a global audience. The announcement follows the success of SXSW Sydney, marking a continued effort to connect cultures and industries across continents.
Jann Baskett, Co-President and Chief Brand Officer of SXSW, expressed enthusiasm for the new venture: "We couldn’t be more excited to bring the SXSW experience to London. Following the success of SXSW Sydney, this is an incredible new opportunity to highlight the elements that make SXSW unique in one of the most vibrant cities in Europe."
The festival will utilize various venues across Shoreditch, a neighborhood celebrated for its artistic and technological vibrancy. This location was chosen for its lively youth culture, diversity, and role as a hub for creativity and tech innovation in the UK. The program will extend beyond the traditional SXSW offerings to include visual arts, design, and fashion, alongside interactive exhibitions and immersive experiences.
Randel Bryan, Managing Director of SXSW London, highlighted the festival's commitment to fostering emerging talent: "SXSW London will provide a platform for the next generation of creative talent and we will be working hard to ensure that opportunities for learning, employment, and community uplift are at the heart of everything we do."
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, welcomed the announcement, noting London's central role in Europe’s tech and creative sectors. "I am delighted to welcome SXSW to London for the first time ever, confirming our place at the heart of Europe’s tech and creative sectors and as a global capital of culture."
SXSW London also aims to carry forward Austin’s focus on climate action and sustainability, underscoring the festival's commitment to driving positive change. Details about the festival's program are expected in the coming months, with ticket sales starting in October 2024. This new chapter promises to enhance London's already rich cultural tapestry, providing a unique platform for cross-continental creative exchange.
