French Icon Isabelle Huppert Named President of Venice Film Festival Jury

The Venice International Film Festival, set to run from August 28 to September 7, 2024, in Italy, has announced French actress Isabelle Huppert as the president of its prestigious International Jury. Huppert, celebrated for her roles in films such as "Elle" and "The Piano Teacher," will oversee the jury tasked with selecting the Golden Lion winner and other accolades.
The Biennale di Venezia's Board of Directors confirmed Huppert's appointment following a recommendation from Alberto Barbera, the Director of the Venice Film Festival. In her acceptance, Huppert expressed her honor and anticipation, stating, "There is a long and beautiful history between the Festival and I. Becoming a privileged spectator is an honor... More than ever, cinema is a promise to escape, disrupt, surprise, and take a good look at the world."
Barbera praised Huppert for her exceptional career and dedication to cinema, noting her "uncommon intelligence" and "ability to look at cinema beyond geographic and mental boundaries." He highlighted her as an ideal choice for a festival that embraces global cinema perspectives.
The jury, comprising up to nine international film and cultural figures, will deliberate on several awards, including the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize, and individual honors such as the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor and Actress, among others. These awards will be presented during the festival's closing night on September 7, 2024.
Isabelle Huppert's illustrious career includes multiple accolades such as the Best Actress award at Cannes for "Violette" and two Coppa Volpi wins at Venice itself. Her extensive work with iconic directors and her ongoing contributions to both film and theater solidify her as a luminary in the international arts community. Her upcoming presidency at Venice is seen not only as a continuation of her storied relationship with the festival but also as a testament to her enduring influence in the world of cinema.
