New Global Short Film Competition Announced at Fredrikstad Animation Festival in Norway
The Fredrikstad Animation Festival (FAF), the premier event for animated films in the Nordic region, is set to further broaden its reach in 2024 with the introduction of a new Global Short Film Competition. Held in Fredrikstad, Norway, this year's edition will feature 65 short films across various competition categories, solidifying the festival’s role as a key player in the international animation scene.
In addition to the traditional Nordic-Baltic Short Film competitions, the festival has introduced a dedicated Global Short Film Competition, featuring 13 films from 13 countries. This move underscores the festival's growing international presence. Festival director Anders Narverud Moen commented, “The expansion of the competition program is a natural result of the significant growth Fredrikstad Animation Festival has experienced in recent years. We warmly welcome the entire international animation community to Fredrikstad while maintaining a strong focus on the small countries of Northern Europe, which are at the heart of the festival’s identity.”
The festival's traditional focus on Nordic and Baltic animation remains strong, with 52 films competing in categories like Professional Films, Student Films, Children’s Films, and Commissioned Films. Meanwhile, the Global Short Film Competition introduces films from a diverse range of countries, offering a broader platform for international animated works.
Some of the notable awards this year include Best Nordic-Baltic Short Film, Best Global Short Film, and the prestigious Grand Prix. In total, eight awards will be presented during the festival, highlighting both regional and international talent.
