NPO Documentary Talent Award 2024 goes to Hannah van Tassel for “Adrift” at IDFA in Netherlands
Director Hannah van Tassel has been awarded the NPO Documentary Talent Award 2024 for her project "Adrift." The announcement was made at the NPO Doc event held during the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) at Het Groene Paleis. The award, accompanied by a €25,000 development grant from the NPO Fund, will support the further development of the film in collaboration with a broadcaster.
The jury, chaired by filmmaker Suzanne Raes, lauded Van Tassel for the originality and ambition of her project. "We aim to celebrate an original voice—someone who brings a fresh perspective to the world, paired with a subject of real urgency," the jury noted. They highlighted the poetic and deeply human approach conveyed in the project’s teaser.
Van Tassel’s journey with "Adrift" began as part of IDFA Project Space NL, a program supported by the NPO Fund. Over several months, six emerging filmmakers collaborated with mentors, including directors Marjoleine Boonstra and Beri Shalmashi and producer Renko Douze, to refine their proposals and create compelling teasers.
The award recognizes Van Tassel's potential to transform a local story into a narrative with universal resonance. Her project will now be eligible for further support from the NPO Fund’s production grants, following development with a broadcaster.
The NPO Documentary Talent Award, formerly known as the Karen de Bok Talent Prize, has spotlighted many prominent filmmakers in the Dutch documentary scene. Past recipients include Shamira Raphaëla, Emma Lesuis, and Faydim Ramshe, reflecting the award's role in fostering documentary innovation.
Van Tassel's "Adrift" now stands poised to advance, supported by the creative guidance and resources that the NPO Fund and IDFA Project Space NL provide. This milestone highlights the importance of nurturing emerging talent in the evolving landscape of documentary filmmaking.
