George Barber is a mathematician who has some very strange dreams. In them, he always encounters a woman named Joyce. No matter what identity she assumes in his dreams, she never seems to remember him. Depending on the dream, she becomes a scientist or a stockbroker. In his dreams, there is also a man who turns out to be a neuroscientist in real life. This neuroscientist is being questioned by two detectives investigating a serial killer who steals his victims’ brains. Who is stealing brains, and why? What, then, is the connection between George, Joyce, the neuroscientist, the serial killer, the two detectives, and the possible worlds that George seems to inhabit?
