Hero Bayan

The poem tells about the tragic fate of Batyr Bayan, a soldier in the service of Abylai Khan. Bayan captured a Kalmyk girl named Kuralai and fell in love with her, but she did not reciprocate, because she fell in love with his younger brother Noyan. The lovers ran away, and Bayan felt betrayed. After catching up with the fugitives, he killed both his brother and Kuralai, and only later realized that he had acted not out of duty, but out of jealousy and love. Burying the lovers together, Bayan, driven by guilt, went to the last battle against the Kalmyks, in which he died.
