Hallowstide

by Steve Socki

Hallowstide is an animated film without a narration; it is intended to be viewed as a visual poem. I was inspired by the poetry of Wallace Stevens, especially the Cloudy Sea. I responded to his use of the abstract association between natural images and human emotions.
My images were created from watercolor sketches of organic, aquatic life forms in tidal pools with undulating reflective surfaces. I turned these natural rhythms into dreamy, flowing “transformation” cycles. The forms turn into haunting and ethereal images, suggesting the reactions of the dancing spirits to each other. The rhythmic structure is based on the theme of ebb and flow. Spectral symbols suggest ascent between separate worlds.
